This is important to me as it means I spend less time grabbing my phone. It also supports one-time passwords, which means you can use it as a Google Authenticator alternative. The Mac App is beautiful, along with dark mode. I have used 1Password for years now and love it. And second, you should never use the same password twice, ever. Why is this important? ![]() The genes coding for the variable (V) regions of the well-known murine anti-hen egg-white lysozyme (HEL) antibody D1.3 were inserted into pIII and displayed on the phage surface as fusion proteins. Subsequently, three groups showed that libraries of millions of random short peptides yielded specific peptides that could tightly bind to diverse antibodies used as selectors, thus laying the foundations for identifying specific peptides for any given antibody with no prior knowledge of its specificity.īy the beginning of the 1990s, John McCafferty and Gregory Winter extended the applications of the phage display methodology to antibody engineering. Three years later, Parmley and Smith described how peptide-phage fusions in a proportion as low as one peptide-phage fusion in a million wildtype virions could be enriched by using biotinylated antibodies specific for the peptides, a method coined as biopanning. Smith showed that foreign DNA fragments could be inserted into the gene encoding the filamentous phage coat protein III (pIII), expressed as peptide-phage fusions and enriched more than 1000-fold over wildtype phage by affinity to a specific antibody directed against the peptide. The first breakthrough in the remarkable development of phage display methodology, which became one of the most successful technology platforms for engineering antibody-based drugs, was published in 1985 by George Smith. The phage display methodology has revolutionized the protein engineering field, with a major impact on antibody engineering. ![]() Finally, we highlight current opportunities and challenges pertaining to phage display platforms and related display technologies. Second, we review the performance of the libraries in terms of the number of positive clones per panning, hit rate, affinity, and developability of the selected antibodies. We first discuss the quality of the libraries and the diverse types of antibody repertoires used as substrates to build the libraries, i.e., naïve, synthetic, and semisynthetic. Here, we compare nine phage display antibody libraries published in the last decade, which represent the state of the art in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies using phage display. This technology was initially developed by George Smith in the mid-1980s and applied by John McCafferty and Gregory Winter to antibody engineering at the beginning of 1990s. Phage display technology has played a key role in the remarkable progress of discovering and optimizing antibodies for diverse applications, particularly antibody-based drugs. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stay one step ahead with the SNKRS app with access to the most coveted drops. All of these can allay some of the squeamishness about walking around someone else’s house barefoot, and help you keep those nasty pathogens on the other side of your front door. Give them indoor slippers so they don’t have to be completely barefoot, keep your floors visibly clean, and you can even try shoe covers for the people who are not quite ready for your new barefoot lifestyle. Making your guests feel more comfortable with having their shoes off is a great first step toward ensuring they’re as committed to your new house rules as you are. So what’s to be done? If you’ve already been wearing your shoes inside, chemical disinfectants are a great way to restore the cleanliness of your floors and carpets, and make you feel a bit better about the no-shoes-inside rule.Īnd after doing your part, it’s time to convince your friends to join in. Whether it’s fear of picking up dirt on your actual feet or just being shy about your toes, not everyone is eager to rip their shoes off in someone else’s home. Some people don’t want to take off their shoes, because doing so means being completely barefoot in someone else’s home, which even I can agree is not the most appealing idea. Reflexologists say that walking around barefoot can help boost your circulation, improve your sleep quality and stimulate the reflexes on the soles of your feet, reducing inflammation, pain and tension.īut despite all the great reasons there are for you to be barefoot inside, there’s also some legitimate pushback around this topic. In many cultures around the world, leaving your shoes at the door is a sign of respect, a nod to superstition and it may even be in service of good health. ![]() Germs and pathogens aside though, it’s important to note that not wearing shoes inside is more than just a hygiene thing. But even at that, all it takes is one walk down the street or a few minutes at the park to make you bring something nasty back home. For many households, the pandemic has greatly reduced the number of places we go to. In plain speak? “It is best to leave your filth outside the door.”īut did we really need professionals to tell us that? I mean think about just how much visible dirt we carry with us on the soles of our shoes – mud, dog poop, sand and gravel, debris from outdoor parks and all the other filthy places that our shoes end up in the course of a day. “Add in cancer-causing toxins from asphalt road residue,” scientists say, “and endocrine-disrupting lawn chemicals, and you might view the filth on your shoes in a new light.” But the real issue is that some of the disease-causing organisms found on our shoes and floors are drug-resistant, causing illnesses that are difficult to treat. ![]() Some household germs can actually be useful in helping build up a child’s immune system, for example. Now let me stop here and say not all dirt is bad dirt. And on those shoes, they have found “a high prevalence of microbiological pathogens”. Shoes worn outside can be vectors for all kinds of dirt and microbes – we already know this – but just how dangerous is it? According to the experts, about one-third of the matter building up inside your home comes from outside, much of it being tracked in on the soles of our shoes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Native to the UK, and renowned for their large size and equally long lifespan, oak trees can reach up to 40 metres tall and live for 1000 years. Salisbury cathedral boasts the tallest spire in England and is supported on a lattice work of 2641 tons of thirteenth century oak beams. You will also find shingles, beams, and steeples cross Britain are built with oak. In fact, the English oak has always enjoyed a close association with the Royal Navy, whose ships were constructed from oak timbers until the middle of the 19th century. The trees produce hard-wearing timber used for the construction of houses (it was a core part of the distinctive Tudor timbered houses), furniture, shipbuilding and artists used its even-grained, honey-coloured beauty for carving and turning. Oak bark has been used for many medicinal purposes due to its strong astringent properties. I find wearing a token of the subtle changes happening in the natural world, as one season gives way to the next, really grounding and a wonderful reminder to be in the moment. When late summer finally gives way to early autumn, the leaves fall from the trees in an auburn shade, and the morning light sheds a golden hue over everything, I know I’m ready to start wearing my acorn necklace. I find, by wearing a token from nature, you can carry a reminder of the season with you throughout your day. I knew when I started making jewellery over 10 years ago, that I wanted to transform these nature keepsakes into precious wearable pieces. I’ve always been fascinated with the intricate details in nature like twisted and tangled branches, delicate forming buds, and tiny miniature acorns. Throughout my childhood I was often found exploring the wild and wonderful carefully studying a tiny insect, adventuring through meadows and forests, forever picking up treasured pieces of nature to go in my box of keepsakes. ![]() ![]() ![]() I know this is a series about iOS features, but I also want to mention how great it is that Find My is coming to macOS Catalina via the Catalyst app-translation technology. It’s a refresh that’s happening because Apple is introducing a raft of new tracking technologies that go beyond anything we’ve seen up to this point. In other words, Find My isn’t just a much-needed merging of two longstanding location-tracking apps. And reports suggest Apple’s also working on a low-power tracking device that you’ll be able to place on other objects, which will then appear in a new Items tab within Find My. ![]() ![]() That technology will allow even more precise discovery of Apple devices. Then there’s Ultra Wideband tech, which Apple is bringing to the iPhone 11. The Find My app will be a major beneficiary of this tech. It’s all encrypted to ensure privacy, but we are about to enter a world where Apple devices emit low-power Bluetooth pings in order to better let you find where they are. This is all about to change with iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, as Apple introduces new technology that will enable other Apple devices to find yours. Laptops that are asleep or off may appear, but at best the app will only show where they were the last time they were connected. AirPods will show up on the list, but it’s really only going to show the last time and location another device connected to them. This section will be a good reminder to de-associate all your old devices-as a product reviewer I have more of these than most people, but my list was still shockingly long.Īs with Find My iPhone, the Devices list is a bit scattershot, because different devices can sense location and phone home via quite different means. Here you’ll see all the devices associated with your Apple ID (and any Apple IDs associated with your family). You can get directions to the location of your friend, and add notifications to alert you when they’re arriving or departing particular locations.īut just hit that new Devices tab and… you’re essentially in Find My iPhone, but a much more modern version that’s using the same interface as the People tab. The interface has been refreshed to the style of a modern iOS app, but the features are more or less the same as before. The list also includes anyone you’re sharing your location with, even if they’re not reciprocating, so you can decide if you want to continue having that kind of a one-way relationship. At the bottom of the screen there’s a People list that lists everyone who is sharing their location with you, with their current location-and if you tap on any of them, the map view will switch to show their location. As before, “people” is defined as people in your Family Sharing group as well as anyone who has agreed to share their location with you. We can quibble about the name-I got used to it in a hurry-but I think it’s a great step forward.īy default 1 Find My opens to much the same view as Find My Friends-the app’s People tab is selected, and the map will zoom out to show people who are near you. ![]() In iOS 13, Apple has done away with both of them, replacing them with the new Find My app. They’re apps that do basically the same thing-one for your own devices, and one for the locations of people you know. Separately, Apple created Find My iPhone, a name that kept getting worse as more Apple devices gained location-sensing technology, but an app that was essential for finding lost hardware. Though a bunch of early App Store apps tried to make it happen, it didn’t really catch on for me until Apple added the feature itself as Find My Friends. Very early on the life of the iPhone, I found myself wishing for the digital equivalent of the Marauder’s Map, so I could see the locations of my friends at a glance. Find My lets me see the locations of my friends (center, right) as well as all the devices associated with my Apple ID (left). Note: This story has not been updated for several years. ![]() |
